Ternopil Region Leads in Milk Production Growth in Ukraine

Ternopil region is among the leaders in Ukraine in terms of dairy farming volumes. Over the past eight years, milk production indicators in the region have tripled, said Olena Zhupinas, Deputy General Director of the Association of Milk Producers (AMP), to Suspilne Ternopil.

Among the leaders in milk production in the region is PAP "Agroprodservice," an AMP member farm. As explained by the farm's Deputy General Director, Borys Rudyuk, one cow at this farm yields 25-30 liters of milk per day:

"We launched the farm a year ago, and we get extra-class milk from Jersey cows. This is one of the best types of milk in the world. Our cows arrived a year ago from Denmark. Milk from the cow reaches the milk tanker's tank in five seconds. No manual milking, no contact with air — the milk is milked from the cows without contact. It undergoes double filtration and cooling — and is in the milk tanker in just 5 seconds. We adhere to all veterinary standards, including European ones," Borys Rudyuk said.

According to the Deputy General Director, they aim to develop the industry as much as possible:

"Overall, the statistics are sad; I monitor this. The trend of declining cattle herds in Ukraine continues. There is a trend of decreasing milk production."

Ternopil region is among the leaders in milk production volume, said Olena Zhupinas, Deputy General Director of the Association of Milk Producers.

"In 2024, Ukrainian dairy farms milked almost 3 million tonnes of raw milk. For the first quarter of 2025, it's 5.5% more than in 2024. The Ternopil region is the leader in increasing milk production in Ukraine. In 2024, compared to 2023, the region increased milk production by 11.6%, which is the best indicator in Ukraine.

Over the past 8 years, Ternopil region has tripled its milk production on dairy farms. If in 2016 they milked 64 thousand tonnes of milk, then in 2024 — 189 thousand tonnes," Olena Zhupinas stated.

Director of the Regional Department of Agro-Industrial Development, Volodymyr Stakhiv, said that despite the decreasing number of cows kept in household farms, the overall milk production is increasing. Currently, according to Stakhiv, the total number of dairy cows in the region is over 75 thousand:

"As of today, agricultural enterprises have a herd of 19.3 thousand, which is growing compared to the previous year. Enterprises with livestock complexes are starting to increase the number of cattle, while the population is slowly 'shedding' their herds.

I would like to note that milk yield per cow is growing significantly. We have some enterprises where the annual milk yield per cow is 14 thousand kilograms. In Soviet times, 3.5 thousand was already considered excellent."
