Cow Herd Size in Ukraine Decreased in July
Military actions, rising production costs, relocation, and market uncertainty are holding back farmers from increasing their cow herds, reports Georghii Kukhaleishvili, an analyst at the Association of Milk Producers. According to preliminary data from the State Statistics Service, as of August 1, 2025, there were 2.1515 million head of cattle in Ukraine's household and industrial sectors, including 1.1404 million cows.
Dairy Farms Increase Cow Herd Sizes
As of June 1, 2025, the cattle population in Ukraine has decreased by 8% compared to last year, primarily due to a reduction in the number of animals in the household sector. At the same time, a slight increase in the number of cows has been recorded in the industrial sector. The increase in cow herd sizes is constrained by uncertainty in the dairy market and a decrease in raw milk purchase prices, reports Georghii Kukhaleishvili, an analyst at the Association of Milk Producers (AMP).
Farm Relocation Leads to Cattle Reduction
The relocation of farms from the Dnipropetrovsk and Sumy regions and the lack of facilities for keeping animals in other regions are likely to contribute to the further reduction of cattle in Ukraine, reports Georgiy Kukhaleyshvili, an analyst at the Association of Milk Producers of Ukraine.
